Your story is interesting to me.
I'm almost in the same boat as you. I'm a Master Auto technician and bored to tears with this industry which is changing from one where there once was craftsmen with true tallent, to "parts changers" that can't speak english.
Four years ago I went to school at night for to join the computer industry. Computers a real passion of mine. I was able to find employment at an outsourse Computer consulting firm. I became Comptia and Microsoft certified during this tenure. I worked more hours, comuted to more clients, and studied more than if I was becoming a Medical Doctor.
A little over a year ago I became a father for the first time, then the Technology industry took a serious down turn.
Now, I am back at the old "wrenching game" finding myself being financially passed over by younger technicians because I was out of the industry for so many years, making less money than I did when I was 30 (I just turned 40) and I'm better and faster at my job than I ever was.
Carefull what you wish for. It might actually come true.
