View Full Version : Job Story: abusive physicians & nurses........surgical technician
:) i was very surprised to see your posting! I am a scrub tech in oklahoma-currently in an rn program(almost finished!) i am actually writing a paper on the subject as we speak. I agree with everything you said, and was surpised to hear that someone else shared my sentiments-the mysery loving company thing. In our situation-nothing has been done, pats on the back, thanks for taking it so well, and the nasty ones are never dealt with.

...IS ANOTHER NURSE! This is the only profession I know of, in or out of the medical field, with exception of the Navy Surface Warfare Community, where the real threat to your honor, integrity, and professionalism comes from one's peer group. The back stabbing, jealousy, racism, ethnocentrism, sexism is the norm for this/these two groups.

I definitely agree with you! Although I am an RN in CT, I don't currently work in an OR, but I have seen this abuse, and experienced it-time and time again!
Nurses are the nastiest people to work with. Most of them are two-faced backstabbers, and think they know it all. Doctors are the biggest assholes of them all too! -well at least most of them, some md's are decent people. I have worked in the hospital, nursing homes, and a dialysis clinic. I can't beleive how unprofessional medical staff are! And the reason people behave like this , is because they can. The system won't improve themselves, so people leave the profession, and therefore we are severely understaffed. Facilities tolerate it because they have nobody else to work.
I wish I never got involved in this profession, and I cannot wait to get the hell out of it. Although I wish I knew of something I could do that might initiate some kind of change, I am not privy to law making and who to contact with what complaints-or how I could get nurses together in an attempt to change the system. A change is needed, because what kind of country are we if we don't take care of our own. Human beings being cared for should come first-NOT the almighty dollar!

It's obvious that you guys are from the States, first off, since you refer to your patients as 'customers', as though they looked you up in the phone book when deciding which pizza place they wanted scrubbing them down with iodine swabs and stitching their flesh.
Secondly, if you hate it that much, quit. God knows the world could use some more people that are in it with their hearts and not their prides, and that goes for your senior staff, too.
Sorry you guys are all having such a rough time of it. I won't see you next time I slip on the wet floor lugging a fifty pound bag of potatoes through the kitchen where I make minimum wage and crack my ribs.

NURSING A PAIN IN THE ASS
YOU WANT TO BE A NURSE BUT IT HURTS,CO WORKERS THINK YOU ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGHT TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING, THE CHARGE NUERSES SKIP YOUR ASSIGNMENT.GIVE IT TO SOMEBODY ELSE WHO THEY LIKE BETTER,
BUT OUT THERE YOU HEAR HOSPITALS AND FACILITIES SAYING "WE ARE LOOKING FOR NURSES." WHO IS GONNA PUT UP WITH JOB DISCRIMINATION?
OR WORK DISCRIMINATION?

I am sick and tired of physicians treating us with complete disrespect, so many are abusive, egotistical, and common. And that is putting it very nicely. Since when is it acceptable in the workplace to have temper tantrums, use the f word, and demean nurses in front of patients and families??
Common decency and professionalism have long since disappeared, and why? Because it's tolerated! It's allowed. It's overlooked!! By our bosses, their bosses, and hospital administrators. When is someone going to say enough is enough?

Some may say and have said "Why don't you just quit?"Yeah -Right! Are you stupid -if it was just that easy.If it was not for cancer I would not have a job.I just put up with the bs and go home at the end of the day.I have been there done that as a RN.I have witness abuse from nursing school to 13 years in the field.I have worked every nursing job except OR,they all suck here in Chicago.

I am asurgical technologist also, currently I am attending evening classes for a degree in secondary science education. I already have a BS. Nurses who I work with are suprised that I don't want to be a nurse, becauser alot of STs with formal training persue nursing as a step up the career ladder. Why the hell would I want to be a nurse, the past 8 years working as a ST have been some of the worst years of my life. Nurses are treated like shit and often they take out their fustrations on the ST. Why, Because they can. Why do MDs abuse nurses, because they can. When I leave this horrible situation I will hold my head up high. I have reported sexual harresment to the EEOC and settled out of court, recently I reported my current supervisor to the coperate complience affiliated with my current employer. This B had the nerve to lay her hands on me and push me, I had to draw the line somewhere. Another time a MD was very nasty with me and I told him he was rude, I was written up and asked how I would change. My reply was that I had no intention of changing because my behavior was approiate, and inquired if the surgeon who was the real problem had been asked how he would change. The reply was we can't do that because he is a doctor. Where in the law does it say that MDs can act like animals and get away with it? I did finally come up with a solution, reduce my hours to part time and only place me with doctors who are non- abusive. As for my coworkers who feel this is unfair I say "too bad", if they stop kissing ass and demeaning themselves then maybe we could get somewhere. But all to often RNs and STs want the doctors to like them and turn themselves inside out for their approval. I once worked with a nurse who pratically did a stiptease for the doctors during surgery, I turned around and she was showing every one her new underware. I thought what the hell is going on. Oh the doctors love it, its gives them a chuckle. And the cat fights that occur between RNs amounst themselves and with STs is just entertainment for these pigs. Belive me I have heard the wispers and laughs while working closely with them. Instead of cutting one another down we should stick together and address the real problems in healthcare. We should promote an atmosphere of mutual respect and speak out when we wittnes incompetent practioners. MDs who have meltdowns during procedures need to be evaluated by a psychitrist to determine their fittness for this type of work. Remember the old addage "If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen". Administration needs to wake up and smelll the coffee, stop assisting MDs by supporting them no matter what, because they are only interested in the bottom line.

I was recently abused by an Oklahoma surgeon...two months ago had a surgery that left me deformed and semi-disabled...and I got a lawyer, who first tried to get my records, to no avail, and then I tried to get them, still to no avail, and when it looked like nothing was happening, I made a few more phone calls to the hospital, and all promises for return calls were ignored, and then the doctor called me, telling me I'd have to get clearance from a shrink to get my records. I said I'd repeat his sentiment to my lawyer, and I did. She said he had no right to stonewall me that way (what are the records hiding???) and she'd "get them". Of course she can get them. But I'm not sure she "got" until now.... what sinister people are turned loose on innocent trusting patients, some of which have no other choice of doctors, thanks to discriminatory insurance practices...and she obviously didn't "get" how much work I was going to have to do INSTEAD of her...at least for the initial critical first weeks.... I only wanted an agreement by this place to help me get the damage corrected...for no extra charge, but now I want the full monty...they guy seems to be asking for it!!! I was also patronized and ignored by everyone on this guy's staff, and the hospital administration's damage control dept.....at least until now.....And yes, I am fighting mad and I have the right to be!!! MICHAEL MOORE IS RIGHT AND BOY AM I GLAD I NEVER CONTINUED MY OWN NURSING STUDIES!!!!! Two blood sisters of mine also started nursing studies and quit for similar reasons to everything I've read here.....SPREAD THE WORD FOLKS...AMERICAN MEDICINE IS A GRAVE HAZARD TO YOUR HEALTH...SUBMIT AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!
