I feel your pain. I have been out of the retail management field for 6 years. I celebrated every Christmas because I was free during the holidays. I know how it can be for customers to tear the crap out of a store and we have to put it back together by the middle of the week because we have "visitors" that want to critique the store to death. This was to be completed on shoestring payroll. I would commute an 1 1/2 hours each way to get to my store and leave 10 or 12 hours later. <br />
....I got out and now I sit at a desk everyday. I have no contact with other people. I miss that. I have people that I worked with, mentored and managaged that have moved up and are constantly grateful for my support and belief in them. These are the positives about retail management. You can go almost anywhere with it.. any city, or country. It has a lot of variety. There's people contact. You can help people that work for you --mold them into management and release them into the open. If you want to go to graduate school then go back-- quit contemplating, you're just talking yourself out of getting that goal that will certainly fullfill your life. That's what retail affords you. Read John Maxwell's books on leadership, and attitude. READ READ READ all you can. Then inject a positive attitude into the people you manage. This is why your career is great!

I think it'd be funny if you jumped off the roof.

Hey, I am a retail manager too. This is what I've always done, but like you, I didn't plan on it. I work for the world's largest retailer, WalMart. I am currently on a sick day because yesterday if I didn't get out of there, I think I might have lost my job. Hey, Christmas is coming, there's no time for personal well-being, let's just get that merchandise out!
I need to get out of this business.
I'm calling my doctor today to find out what he can give me to take the edge off.
