Last week, I walked the wall; Jinshanling - Simatai, and you have put my experience into words. The shadows (or guides as we called them) appeared after we had crossed and invisible start line, and it tried to sell their wares when you were at your weakest moments. We were able to use the death slide to actually get into the Simatai village, across the lake, in order to meet our mini bus.

My trip to Simitar was quite different from yours...my son arranged for us to see the REAL wall, not reconstructed etc.and off we went in a hired car to the cable car ( as advertized) for Mom (me)(68) to at least get my feet on this marvelous structure. Got there ( Simitar) and car was not running and I knew my bod wouldn't make it up the incline without a year's training, so I settled in with the charming lady who was furiously knitting a beautiful sweater, had chi, bought a few books and allowed her to take care of me until three hours later son and bride came tumbling down the incline. my gray hair made her quite protective me and I had a magnificent view of the winding dragon called the WALL against bright blue skies. She was a delight and very kind and I shall remember ourafternoon together with great fondness. I hated to leave and found China very very interesting.
