What an inspiring story! I too am very interested how people feel about the work they do, and how people are treated on the job. Great story.

To be perfectly honest, as someone who has been in the nonprofit community for 15 years, has only an A.A. degree and has also studied organizational development on my own, I do find this hard to believe. Not having a degree is a disability no matter what you are working towards. Just having a desire does NOT open the doors.

If you have been as successful as you say, that do be aware. You are rare.

I have a great job and still find that something is missing. I am beginning to open myself to the idea that I might be happier working for the benefit of others rather than for the profit of a corportation. Your story is inspiring. It is funny that you mention at least 3 times that you didn't have a degree. Well it seems that your journey is going to equip you with the degree that you have felt strongly for. Thanks for your inspiring story. I hope that I can find such passion in my work at some point on my journey as you have.

I am the Director of Human Resources for this charitable non profit business. I am also in college. Right now my business partners and roommmates are having a hard time keeping things on the right track due to our shared anticipation of graduation. We have a million and one things on our plate right now and i just wanted some advice. Thank you. Our organization is based in Winston-Salem, NC . I would really like somem advice and a non-profit mentor you might say.

For 16 years I was director for a non-profit medical trust fund. All I have known is volunteer work for over 20 years. While I have a list of organizations I have served with, I am finding it difficult to obtain a paid position with all those years' experience. I loved working with children and their families. For all those years, I had a supportive board who allowed me the freedom to grow and learn, and supported me in decisions that I believed needed to be made. While not degreed, I have some college classes under my belt. Not once did the professionals on my board treat me as inferior due to the lack of degree. I miss that but the organization disbanned when our purpose was no longer needed in the community.
