I'm a software eng student with an appetite for creativity. My dream job would be to grow an herb garden, make soap and good food and sustain myself that way, indefinately. How does one person be so divergent, I wonder? I guess I'll just keep going to school until I figure it out. Let me know how you solved your own divergence.

I am a computer network support technician and know that this field is extremely demanding, but I am learning where to draw the line for my own sanity and home and social life. Most often, this job is a very "unthankful" job. So why kill yourself?

I have problems (being female) with men and have been confronted with "what are you doing in a man's world?" I do not even bother to respond. I find that they are not prepared to share what they know but are quick to find out what I am doing in terms of their learning process. Still, I don't let that hold me back. I just focus on what I need to do.

I WOULD STRONGLY URGE YOU AGAINST LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE. DO NOT GO TO LANDSCAPE GRAD SCHOOL WITHOUT FIRST LEARNING THE AUTOCAD SOFTWARE AND VOLUNTEERING FIRST HAND IN A LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE OFFICE, FOR A MONTH OR TWO, TO EXPERIENCE IT FIRST HAND.

99% of what landscape architects do is dirty, dirty work, and most all of it is on the drafting program, AutoCAD. AutoCAD is your life. Drafting trench drain details, curb cut details, moving sidewalks around, drawing score lines, writing out construction notes, plugging in the architect's base plan, the civil plan, the irrigation consultant's plan, the lighting consultant's plan. Move that sidewalk. Shift the planter. Cut the curb. Add the expansion joint detail.

The most exciting thing you get to do is

decide where the trees go, IF you're lucky. That takes maybe one day, in a 3-week project- usually trees and shrubs surround suburban buildings and go in median strips of suburban parking lots.
<br>
This is not rocket science. Pick a tree symbol, and copy it around in AutoCad.
<br>
<br>
A huge portion of the work is setting up the construction sheets in AutoCAD. Titleblock updates. Replacing the architect's drawing every time they change their mind. Getting rid of the civil information you don't need. Doing grading plans- 1.2% slope to this drain or that drain.
<br>
<br>
The rest of the job is management oriented. Because landscape architects are so low on the economic chain, they are at the mercy of everybody. So you get bounced around from project to project, task to task as you work. You work under the architect, who rarely respects what you do.
<br>
<br>
Everyone at my job is burnt out and creatively frustrated. More over, they are stuck because their grad degrees put them in debt and their salaries keep them locked in.
<br>
<br>
If you really know your stuff in tech,
<br>
I would strongly recommend you work part-time or contract, taking painting or music classes in your off days. You have a golden opportunity for this in your particular field.
<br>
<br>
Lanscape architecture is not the romantic vision you have in mind. Check it out before investing in school.
