Love my job. I knew years ago that an office job five days a week in the same place with the same people wasn't for me so I searched until I found the job for me that lets me control my income.
Currently I am a freelance court reporter that does lots of federal work. I work 2-3 days out of the house and 2-3 days at home totalling around 30-40 hrs a week.
I've been a court reporter for over 10 yrs and have worked in a lot of different court reporting related jobs from teaching to state superior work.
My boss, for the most part, can be motivating, lazy, uncooperative and unpredictable all in the same day and that's because I'm my boss.
If I want to work I can, if I don't, I don't make any money. I sign my name to every transcript I put out so there's no "passing the buck"
I have to admit, I do miss the office birthday parties and "happy hr." but I just work extra hard to make plans with friends.
Oh, and did I mention discipline.
I never know what I'm going to be hearing for that day's work so there's lots of spontanaity, from where I'm going to be working, to who and how long. I've gotten really good at directions and adapting to personality
styles.
I did find it frustrating the first time I had a weekend getaway planned and the attorney at the end of an all day Friday depo told me he needed the transcript by Monday! Granted, I made enough money from the job to take a two week long island vacation, I wasn't happy at that moment.
Listening to people with accents is difficult along with people who mumble, keep their hands over the mouths when they talk, interrupt people, talk over other people and say axed for asked.
In the next 5 years I hope to do CART, computer aided realtime transcription which is when you go with a hearing impaired student to class.
In 10 years...maybe sooner, I hope to be a closed-captioner. One of my goals is to do the Superbowl.
I'm an RPR, registered professional reporter, so I can work anywhere except CA.
