Marketing broadcast equipment…..If it were always fun, you would not get a paycheck

We manufacture broadcast equipment. I manage a marketing team and a distribution team…international distribution.

I stumbled into it. I started off with a contract writing manuals and it just went from there. I was working freelance and making a good salary, but I didn’t have to work hard to get projects and I figured at some time I’d either need to spend a lot of time working on (getting) contracts or I’d have to work full time. So I decided to work full time.

I guess I like that I manage a lot of things and work with a lot of different people so there is a lot of variety. It is always different. We’re very busy so it feels like there is a lot to do…and there is never time to do everything so at least I get to choose what I enjoy from the hundreds of things that need to be done.

I don’t like the long hours. Things that only I can do and other people can’t do…things I can’t delegate. Or not having other people understand or appreciate the things I’ve had to do to get something done. No positive feedback at all…

My boss happens to be one of my very good friends. He became that along the way…we didn’t start out that way. He should open his eyes though to what is going on in the company. He is a brilliant person, but he has no idea what is going on from day to day. The company is growing so fast that he is no longer able to see what the responsibilities are. It makes it difficult to support what we do…

Why do I keep doing it? It’s been a good learning experience. It’s very tough, but it can still be interesting. And everything I do makes something better…I don’t feel like I’m wasting my time. Nobody feels absolutely no frustration…

I think of quiting daily. I could do a lot of things. I would take a long holiday and then probably do the same thing again somewhere else. Not a different city as a lot of things tie me to the city I am in but a different company.

No job is perfect and if it were fun all the time, you wouldn’t get a paycheck.

In 5 years, I hope to be making more money…In 30 years, I’d like to not have to make any money at all…retired if I can possibly do that.
