Male Assistant Administrator But More Like a Punching Bag

Majored in political science, and will be graduating soon, but in the meantime, I picked up a part time gig as an assistant admin for an academic research group. It’s got a grandiose name with very little to show for it. Hell, the website hasn’t been updated in 3 years.

I was first hired on a few months ago, and was hired on the spot. Contrary to popular belief, this is not a good thing, usually. Being taken immediately means two things; whoever you’re replacing must have left in a hurry, and they’re so badly organized that any warm body will do. If any of you guys out there ever get offered an admin job on the spot, beware.

I took the gig because I needed the money at the time, but God knows I’d quit if I could. Another lesson to learn: don’t get greedy. My predecessor left the same day I came in, so that’s already a warning sign. She was only able to train me for half a day, and spent most of the time warning me about the boss’ quirks. In hindsight, this gig’s been doomed from the start.

I started off with giving this my best shot, despite the limited info I was given, and spent the next two months learning the ropes on my own. The boss is usually out, so I’m by myself, but he rarely gives instructions on what to do, unless it’s at the 11th hour, so to speak. He likes being condescending is the sort of academic who prefers self-aggrandizement over actually helping students. He’s also apparently got some sort of Napoleon complex, and isn’t taken very seriously by anyone of the same rank as him or higher. Seems most of them treat me with some kind of pity for being stuck there as well.

Needless to say, this leaves me to take up the verbal abuse when he gets in his moods. He often likes to use the “I’m overworked, and underpaid” line a lot, but I highly doubt it.

I keep in contact with my predecessor to keep me sane, and for advice when I’m in a jam. But when your own predecessor advises you to find another job ASAP, you know it’s a bad situation. I know there are some of you out there who may be blessed with a happy and peaceful job as an admin, and to be sure, you are the lucky ones. But this line of work really is a crap shoot.

To those of you already in this kind of situation, stay on your toes, and don’t let them get to you. Firing someone is more of a pain in the ass than you think, and most people who leave an admin job quit due to the stress. Stick with it till you can find something better, and content yourselves with the realization that you have your boss by the balls the moment you decide to quit. Who the hell will take care of everything for him/her when you’re gone anyway?

Final tip: If you REALLY want revenge, delete their entire address book before you go. That’ll put the screws to them.
