Dock Worker Job (Sjauer)…….bloody dangerous.

In Norway you call it (being a dock worker) a sjauer…translated it means a person who makes loud noise.

There was a boat which sank and they towed it into harbor. They needed people to take things off of the boat and put them in clean containers. They were going to chop up the boat and basically sell it for scrap. I just needed the money. You just move stuff around on the docks….as a dock worker. You move cargo around, you move boats around…

You don’t really make lots of noise. It’s just the name of the profession.

It was dangerous. There was a person who crushed their foot. There was this pallet full of marble and he was positioning it and he didn’t realize that his foot was underneath and he just ended up crushing his foot. There was this other guy who had 2 fingers which just popped right out…

I was scared of my boss. He was bigger than me. Big, fat, hairy motherfucker. Not all the guys were scary. You work with people and there are some people that you don’t understand while you are working there. In the army, you’d see the gentlest person or here you’d see people who were really small or who had wives and kids….like ‘what do you do for a living?’, I work on the docks. ┬áHa!
